One hundred years ago tonight, the 1st ball dropped on Times Square, NYC to ring in the new year!

  The ball was made from iron and wood materials measuring 5 ft across.  It used 100 25-watt bulbs and weighed in at 700 POUNDS!

The ball has dropped every year since then, with e exception of 1942 and 1943 when there was a “wartime dim-out” of lights in NYC.

Updated over and over again, the ball that will descend tonight is  environmentally friendly, consuming the same amount of electricity as needed to power 10 toasters!

Also, “they” have added something new this year to the celebration, the WALL OF WISHES. Here, New Year’s Eve revelers can write down their wishes for the new year on “Official Times Square New Year’s Eve Confetti” which will then be mixed in with the plain confetti and distributed together, essentially “releasing” the wishes and their hopefully positive energy out into the new year!

As for resolutions, I myself resolve to begin posting on a regular basis again after the new year!

“Ball-Dropping” to mark time has been used for quite a while. In 1833 in Greenwich, England, a ball was dropped on a flagpole atop England’s Royal Observatory everyday at 1pm. This allowed ship captains nearby to properly set their chronometers.
